Below is an up-to-date list of my favorite supplies and resources that I’ve curated specifically for punch needle fashion.
The world of punch needle is constantly evolving, with new yarns, tools and possibilities emerging all the time. As I continue to explore & discover new resources, I’ll share them with you here!
Recommended Resources & Supplies
-
Oxford Punch Needles
The best needles in the biz! While there are 8 sizes, I made every project in this book with either the 10 Regular or 14 Fine, which are my two preferred and most used sizes of needle.
-
Punch Needle World Rug Yarn
Durable and beautiful, this is my yarn line that I designed specifically for punch needle! All the pieces in my book are punched with this yarn. Available in two widths, Regular and Fine, that correspond with the size of punch needle that you choose.
-
20" x 20" Gripper Frame
Gripper strip frames are the best frames for punch needle! My custom 20" x 20" frame is the size I've found to be the most versatile for the widest range of punch needle projects, making it possible to create numerous items all with one product.
-
20" Felt Frame Cover
Protect your hands and clothes as you punch! My super soft, double layered felt Gripper Frame Cover provides a protective barrier between your hands and the sharp gripper teeth of our 20" x 20" Gripper Strip Frame. I never work without it!
-
Punch Needle World Bundle
Save on your most important tools when you buy the Punch Needle World bundle! This foundation bundle includes the 20” Gripper Frame, 20” Felt Cover and your choice of Oxford Punch Needle size.
-
Cotton Monkscloth
Flexible and strong, this is the best foundation cloth for punch needle rug hooking! It is what I used as the base material for all 15 projects in the book. Compatible with all sizes of Oxford Punch Needle and rug yarn.
-
LDH Imperial Scissors
A good pair of embroidery scissors are the final tool in any punch needle toolkit! The 3.5” Imperial Scissors by LDH are my favorite. They’re small but have a large enough handle for my fingers, they’re gorgeous, and they make punching feel like a special occasion!
-
Large 20" x 30" Gripper Frame
A bigger investment for serious punchers, this is the largest frame sold by The Oxford Company and is a great size for making bigger pieces without needing to move your work on the frame as you go. Don’t forget the corresponding frame cover to go with it!
-
Violet Jane Rug Yarn
Violet Jane is The Oxford Company’s line of rug yarn, and it works beautifully for punch needle fashion pieces. They offer both solid and variegated shades, and each color is available in 2 sizes, Regular and Fine, to correspond to the different Oxford Needle widths.
-
Seal Harbor Rug Yarn
Premium, 100% New Zealand Rug Wool in over 200 gorgeous colors, hand-dyed in Vermont by longtime rug hookers and yarn dyers. Soft, smooth and easy to work with, this is the yarn that I use for extra special projects! The bulky size of this yarn works onlly with the Oxford Regular needles.
-
Quince Osprey Yarn
The Osprey line by Quince is a 100% wool Aran/Heavy-worsted weight yarn that works beautifully with the Fine Oxford Punch Needles. With a lighter weight than rug wool, this yarn is perfect for creating punch needle fashion pieces with a softer, more flexible hand.
-
Hue & Me Yarn
This acylic & wool blend line, designed by Alexi Tavel for Lion Brand Yarn, comes in beautiful muted tones. It works with the Regular Oxord Punch Needles, and is an affordable alterative to 100% rug wool! Just be cautious about pilling and care since this is a blend.
-
Duckbill / Flat Back Scissors
Duck bill scissors are essential for trimming the tails of your yarn after punching, during the clean-up phase! It’s important to get the kind with a bent handle, as that enables you to trim your yarn flat against your piece even when it’s in the frame. I love this pair!
-
LDH Midnight Edition Fabric Shears
LDH is a family-run business and I’m a big fan of their brand and their scissors! These elegant fabric shears are my go-to for cutting monskcloth, lining and facing. They’re sharp, durable and make me feel like a professional in every way when I use them!
-
Coats & Clark Extra Strong Upholstery Thread
One of the secrets to punch needle fashion is using the right thread to sew your pieces together! Punch needle is a heavy, thick textile and requires a stronger thread — Coats & Clark nylon upholstery thread is my go-to!
-
Fabric Shaver / Depiller
A good quality fabric shaver/depiller tool is your secret weapon in keeping your punch needle fashion pieces looking like new! With use, some punch needle pieces (especially those created with blended yarn) are prone to pilling, which can be cleaned up quickly with this handy tool.
